How do you get into.. like, Esther's head, when you're getting ready to film a scene for Squaresville? Was there any music you listened to before filming the finale or anything to help you get into character? P.S. the finale was AMAZING. I can't wait till season 3 :D
the great thing about esther is that she’s been part of my life for three years now, and i knew so much about her early on that it’s super easy to find her personality and get back in her head, but the season 1 finale and season 2 were definite challenges. for example, we shot everything in Esther’s room in one day, and we shot all of zelda’s room over the first weekend of shooting, so that included the season 1 finale phone call, the scene listening to taylor baybson, the monologue…as well as the s1 finale fight scene, and the season 2 finale ending. it was a pretty intense 3 days for me last september, and what y’all didn’t know was that before i went to work the first day of the season, i had producer’s session before, which was comedy (i got to the final two on that job which was a potential recurring, but bygones), so i had a very short amount of time to change gears for the first day ahead of me, but i had done a lot of prep work BEFORE the first day of shooting, so i could slide in a little bit and not feel like i have to completely backtrack.
i did a LOT of writing in journals about how i felt going into the finale as well as meeting with friends of mine who were in the “coming out” process (one of which is a dear, dear friend of mine and she really opened up to me, which i am forever grateful for), and i found a lot of quotes/did research and put them in the book and in my script. I draw on other people’s lives a lot when i’m building a character, which is why i love memoirs and documentaries so i can get into people’s heads, plus having some personal situations infused in there (that fight scene in season 1 hit a little too close to home). i met with matt before we started shooting the season 1 finale and season 2, where we talked about the more intense scenes, his expectations, and rehearsing with him. i didn’t necessarily listen to “esther music,” per se, but i listened to the kind of music that would make ME feel like i was going into battle even when i felt super uncertain and not confident about my work. (which, when i have a big job or a big audition, i listen to certain songs….i rap in the car a lot.) lots of kanye, jay-z, mumford, head and the heart, some panic! and fall out boy…and yes, i did listen to justin bieber a bit too (since taylor baybson is obviously the L7 version of THE BIEBZ)
ultimately, i just had to trust that my prep work plus working with Matt was enough, but even after we would shoot something and move on, i still felt unsteady and shaky in my work and was kind of in a haze. it was hard to dissociate from esther that weekend, which i normally can do (i find it easier to check work at the door when i get off set, so i go see a movie or grab dinner with friends or watch netflix), but for some reason that weekend was just a little too ingrained. i miss her though, so i hope we can do a season 3 (which our statement on that is here: http://www.hypable.com/2013/09/14/squaresville-season-2-finale-airs-showrunner-address-possibility-of-season-3/)
So as you (presumably) know, we haven’t posted a video in a few weeks. We’re kinda bummed about that, and we know some of you are, too, but we’re still trying to figure our whole GRAND PLAN out, and we realized that part of it is that we want to make sure we’re bringing you QUALITY…
It’s been so incredible to see how Sarah Wars has resonated the Squaresville audience. Obviously, it’s an episode close to my heart—and that’s not just because I play Sarah. (Although I’m sure that doesn’t hurt!)
When Matt began writing this episode, he lovingly referred to it as his “Spaceman…
Okay, maybe not completely different. While Squaresville is in between seasons Squaresville Confessions is going to go into reruns. I’m going to go back to the very beginning and reblog every confession. They will be queued to post once per day. If you send in a confession it will still be made.
[EDIT: Just a reminder, these are old confessions. Some are from season 1 before we even knew Esther was gay.]
